Just a short post to let you know that I am currently  taking part in an exhibition  at the London Design Musem  in conjuction with Arik Levy, entitled  "Digital Crystal". This is the next step in our work for interactive video and sound,  presented in 2009 in Milan. “Clemente”, Sound installation for the Acquario Civico di Milano and Slott Gallery

Dear Friends,

I am thrilled to announce the completion a new sound installation for presentation at the Acquario Civico di Milano, from the 14th-19th April. The work was commissioned by Paola Bjaringer, founder and director the Slott Gallery in Paris for the exhibition "Préliminaires" as part of the Salone Del Mobile in Milan.  It will accompany design work by Matali Crasset and Florence Jaffrain.

“Clemente”, Sound installation for the  Acquario Civico di Milano and Slott Gallery

“Clemente” is a festival of sound in space. A liquid space. A world equally ample and weightless, surrounded by subtle light and filtered tonalities. It offers us reflections on our origins and parallels with our future. It is a universe of frequencies, where sonic communication seems to have evolved to a minimum, becoming undeniably tailor-made and masterfully efficient for those living and interacting in this element.

In parts of this work we can hear: The Humpback Whale (Megaptera Novaeangliae), Blue Whale (Balaenoptera Musculus), Orca Whale (Orcinus Orca), Sperm Whale (Physeter Macrocephalus), Pilot Whale (Globicephala melaena), Minke Whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata), Risso's Dolphin (Grampus Griseus), Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops Truncatus) and the Grey Seal (Halichoerus Grypus).

St. Clemente is the name of the island off the California coast where I spent many quiet days on the ocean with my father.  This work is dedicated to him, along with my appreciation and thanks to Paola Bejeringer and Slott Gallery for commissioning this project.

Our presence on and in the seas, including the noises that we create and inject into it has an impact on the life and well being of that world and on ours.

Tapage Nocturne. "Mexico" on Radio France

I had the great pleasure of spending yesterday afternoon at Radio France, being interviewed and recording my composition Mexico, for flute trio and electronics, with the Trio d'Argent, for whom I wrote the piece. The broadcast will be on Bruno Letort's weekly contemporary music show entitled Tapage Nocturne, on France Musique.

Broadcast date is on the night of Sunday/Monday (March 7th-March 8th) at midnight. Here is the link: Tapage Nocturne.

Osmosis_ Video/Sound Installation for Arik Levy.

Osmosis Sound World.

I have just completed a video/sound installation for designer, Arik Levy's solo exhibition for Swarovski at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile, in Milan. The team included myself on sound,  Thomas Boaziz on video and Stéphane Maguet, owner of Numeriscausa, who oversaw the production of the project with the team at ldesign for Arik Levy..

Swarovski commissioned Arik Levy to create an exhibition of work inspired by, and created with the unique concept of crystal. Levy has created a series of installations that will illustrate the diversity of Swarovski crystal.

My part in this 800 square-meter exhibit was to create an interactive sound world which would accompany a 5x7 meter, 3D image of a diamond. This shape is constantly deformed, exploded and reconfigured according to various parameters and driven by people moving in front of the screen, around the defined space. I should be receiving images from the show very soon.

Below, I have posted some screenshots of the MaxMsp program which I made  for the installation. 

The program is made up of 8 stereo sound banks which are constantly playing back at different speeds, including different panning and various treatments, depending on the number of people and the activity of the spectators, as well as, the color of the diamond.

The sounds come mostly from samples of glass, crystal, ice, rocks, moving earth and  bowed percussion instruments which I recorded in my studio. They  are modified  by 2 time-based harmonizers which change the pitch,  sound quality (freq. modulation), delay and feedback.

The amazing space which Arik has conceived to expose his original works of art and design is 100 meters long by 8 meters wide.  It flows, as the title of the expo suggests, and culminates with this huge video/sound world. A joyous and very physical experience! One shakes arms and legs, dances and jumps in front of the giant, floating, organic and other-worldly vessel which seems to crave our attention!!
